La enfermedad arterial periférica es un síndrome muy común que afecta a un importante volumen de población adulta en todo el mundo. La arteriosclerosis es la causa más frecuente de enfermedad arterial de los miembros inferiores. Los factores de riesgo no modificables incluyen la edad, el sexo masculino y la historia familiar de enfermedad aterotrombótica. Los factores de riesgo mayores y modificables incluyen el tabaquismo, la dislipemia, la diabetes mellitus, la hipertensión arterial y la hiperhomocisteinemia. Más de dos terceras partes de los pacientes con enfermedad arterial periférica son asintomáticos o muestran síntomas atípicos en las piernas, por lo que la enfermedad aterotrombótica generalizada pasa desapercibida. Además, cerca de la mitad de los pacientes con enfermedad arterial periférica no han sufrido nunca un evento cardiovascular, por lo que muchos no son indentificados, lo que se traduce en falta de instauración de medidas de tratamiento eficaces. En esta obra se recogen todos los distintos estadios de la enfermedad arterial periférica.
